Affordable Liability Insurance Available to NFPW Members

To endure and succeed in today's increasingly global business, writers must continually keep pace with evolving technology, marketplace demands, competitors, and a changing legal landscape. Complicating the picture further is an expanding litany of media liability exposures—ranging from defamation, invasion of privacy, and emotional distress to copyright infringement, trademark infringement, misappropriation, and errors and omissions—any of which can result in a calamitous lawsuit from any number of sources.

Attorneys and insurers have seen a rise in the last few years in the number and severity of claims for writers' errors and omissions. Unlike traditional claims involving allegations of libel, copyright infringement, and plagiarism, these claims seek to impose liability on the writer for physical injuries or economic loss allegedly caused by some error or negligent publication in the ideas or expressions contained in the published material.

Chubb has been insuring members of the media for 40 years, and we've seen them sued time and time again. We understand that in today's constantly shifting legal landscape, the precise nature of media liability lawsuits can be difficult to predict. Unfortunately, one thing that can be predicted is the financial and reputational havoc such lawsuits can cause. In response, they've created MediaGuardSM—a broad, flexible errors and omissions liability insurance policy that specifically addresses the nature of these risks.

Unfortunately, in the past, this coverage has been available only to large media entities such as publishing and broadcasting companies. Freelancers and other individual communicators and media professionals have been left to hope they are covered by the publications to which they contribute which frequently is not the case or else pay large premiums to purchase standalone media liability policies.

Working with your association, Chubb has developed a media liability insurance program exclusively for members of the National Federation of Press Women. The program is affordably priced and is administered by Walterry Insurance Brokers, a brokerage firm that has been providing media liability coverage for over 20 years. Coverage is worldwide and protects you against claims arising from articles you have written which are published or disseminated by others. Information on this program is referenced on our join page or you can contact the Media Department at Walterry Insurance Brokers at 800-638-8791.
