The histories behind the Federation

Media Women of South Carolina

Established in 1980, Media Women of South Carolina (MWSC) became one of the newest affiliates of the National Federation of Press Women (NFPW).

Created as a nonprofit organization for professionals and students in communications, its objectives were, and continue to be, to advance the standards of the communications profession, provide for exchange of communications ideas, knowledge and experiences, and coordinate efforts of state and national interest to women communications professionals.

Over the course of its 37 years, MWSC has offered networking opportunities, professional development workshops, and annual meetings coordinated with these sessions that have provided members and others the tools they've needed to be successful.

Members in the Upstate meet monthly to hear speakers, share ideas, work on community service projects and network with the area's leading media professionals. Throughout the state, our members are engaged at all levels of various communications fields and include editors, writers, graphic designers, marketing specialists, public relations practitioners, public information officers, authors, web designers, social media and content managers, as well as freelancers and owners/managers of communications related businesses.

Since its inception, MWSC has strongly supported NFPW. Our members have participated at the national level in a variety of ways, serving on different committees, as appointed directors to the NFPW Board, as quadrant directors to the NFPW Education Fund Board, as speakers/presenters at national conferences, and as advisors/leaders for several projects and initiatives.

MWSC has also supported an NFPW President, Meg Hunt (2005-2007), as well as hosted many NFPW Fall and Spring Meetings and the 2014 NFPW Conference in Greenville, S.C.

Throughout the nearly four decades since its establishment, MWSC members have consistently participated in the communications contest with marked success in numerous categories, often with some members winning the national sweepstakes.

As the tides continue to turn in the fields of communications, MWSC members strive to find ways to not only remain leaders in these fields, but to do so with the highest standards, integrity and commitment to the people's right to know.
