SCMP & NFPW
Communications Contests

Every year the National Federation of Press Women (NFPW) has a National Communications Contest for members. The entries that compete at this level have all placed “first” in communications contests run by affiliate organizations such as Southern California Media Professionals (SCMP).

SCMP Contest
In March, SCMP accepts contest entries that must have been published, issued, broadcast, printed or e-published the previous year, from January 1 through December 31. There are 78 categories including print, TV, radio, public relations, book authors, sports, speeches, photography, headlines and more. Judges are leaders in their fields of expertise. They provide a merit rank to determine 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners and honorable mentions, as well as constructive comments for each entry, if possible.

NFPW Contest
First-place entries are forwarded to the National competition. Non-members of NFPW may enter the SCMP contest but their entries are not forwarded to national.

Check out 2010 winners in both contests!

Contest entrants for national that accumulate the most points (based on the number of his or her winning entries and the number of competing entries in those categories) are named recipients of the NFPW Sweepstakes Award. Cash awards of $250 for 1st place, $150 for 2nd place and $100 for 3rd place are given to individual winners. The affiliate with the most sweepstakes points receives a $100 cash prize.

The SCMP and NFPW communications contests are still a way to recognize exemplary journalistic work, celebrate professionalism and promote the power of effective and impactful communication.
