As an affiliate of the National Federation of Press Women (NFPW), Southern California Media Professionals  (SCMP) offers active membership to communications professionals actively engaged in any aspect of communications (radio, TV, print journalism, electronic journalism, public relations, published credits, journalism teacher) for remuneration, or whose work is the equivalent of paid professional work. Students enrolled full-time in a community college, four-year college or university communications program are eligible for student membership.

Benefits

Membership in SCMP includes membership in NFPW.  Affiliation with NFPW provides benefits that include association and networking with professional peers; a job bank; professional development grants via the NFPW Education Fund; affordable, discounted libel insurance for freelancers; the opportunity to influence legislation through the First Amendment Network; the NFPW publication, Agenda; a national roster—and lasting friendships!

Meetings

Because SCMP’s membership area is vast—from Modesto to San Diego—meetings are held only twice a year, usually in the Orange County and San Diego County areas (see Calendar in left margin for dates). The meetings feature networking opportunities, guest speakers, and/or tours that can generate story ideas. At the spring meeting, an awards luncheon includes:

  • presentation of awards for the local/regional communications contest
  • election of officers
  • preparation for the National (annual) conference

At the fall meeting, members who placed in the national communications contest are recognized and presented awards.

Events

SCMP concentrates on two official activities:

  • The annual, members-only, Professional Communications Contest which advances first place winners in each category to the NFPW communications contest (the only such contest in the country)
  • The annual High School Communications Contest, which also advances first-place winners to national competition and recognition.

Our members have found that belonging to SCMP enriches our professional and life experiences and helps young communicators who have chosen to follow “in our footsteps.”
