Get “face” time on talk radio!
Radio interviews are easier than ever because you can do them by phone.
That’s one of the things Arlene Uslander of Arizona Press Women discovered when she wrote a review about “Talk Radio Wants You: An Intimate Guide to 700 Shows and How to Get Invited” by Francine Silverman.
As an author, Arlene says radio interviews really help her to promote her books. But how do you find the right show for your expertise? Most radio Web sites and listings do not include information about the show’s themes or guest criteria.
That’s where “Talk Radio Wants You” comes into play. Silverman presents the host’s bio, contact information and best method of contact. Arlene notes that Silverman “delves into the host's psyche, not simply for the show's theme and guest profile, but for his or her opinion on the best and worst guests and whom to invite back, along with interview tips.”
“Silverman's unique reference guide is designed for anyone with a product or service to promote who wants to go on radio,” Arlene says.
“Talk Radio Wants You: An Intimate Guide to 700 Shows and How to Get Invited” is available at here, from the publisher and from book stores and Amazon.com.

Open government: an NFPW writer and Sunshine Week focus on its importance

Participants include print, broadcast and online news media, civic groups, libraries, nonprofits, schools and others interested in the public's right to know.

“Why newspaperwomen leave their jobs”
NFPW invites you to participate in a study about what motivates newspaperwomen to leave their jobs. Your participation and/or referral of others is important because it will help inform the industry about what it can do to improve its treatment of female employees and control the loss of women from its ranks.
Any woman who has worked at a newspaper qualifies for the study. For more details on guidelines and the study, read the full story (.doc, pdf). If you have questions, contact Amber Willard, a former journalist and doctoral student at the University of Texas at Austin who is conducting the study, at awillard@mail.utexas.edu.

Rep. Jim Oberstar is the Ranking Member on the Transportation Committee where the bill sits. He needs to hear that we want to see this legislation passed. Please join us in sending him a letter or e-mail urging passage of this bill before the election Nov. 7.

Will contest changes affect you?
A few changes have been made in the 2007 Communications Contest categories, approved by the board at its spring meeting April 28 and 29 in Kill Devil Hills, N.C.
Suggestions for changes were submitted to Contest Director Donna Hunt of Texas by members from over the country, then studied by a contest review committee composed of Katherine Ward of Delaware, Cecilia Green of Illinois and Diana Saenger of Southern California, who made the recommendations.
The changes include the addition of several subcategories and the elimination of others, along with wording changes that hopefully will make the categories easier to understand and follow, and make some categories and subcategories more realistic.
Check to see if these revised categories affect you! (pdf, .doc)
The contest is reviewed every two years and will be studied again in 2008 for contest year 2009. Suggestions must be submitted in writing.
This year an effort has been made to update the categories in mid-summer and place them on the Web so that affiliates and individual members can begin making plans for the 2007 contest. The contest and rules also will be available at the 2006 Conference in Denver, Colo.
The board is encouraging greater participation in the 2007 contest from individual members and affiliates. First-place wins in affiliate and at-large competitions are entered in the national contest.
Check back here for upcoming promotional material on contest and a listing of 2006 winners.

Board meets in Kill Devil Hills, NC
(Story by Donna Hunt, NFPW Contest Director)
There’s nothing like having breakfast with "Queen Elizabeth" (the first) and spending time with Orville and Wilbur Wright, all in the same day.
This is what happened a couple of weeks ago prior to the spring board meeting of the National Federation of Press Women on the Outer Banks of North Carolina at Kill Devil Hills – the next door neighboring town to Kitty Hawk.
Kill Devil Hills is the home of a long-time very good Press Woman friend, Gwen White, with whom I share duties of directing the national communications contest. Gwen had planned a weekend retreat for the NFPW board and chairpersons, complete with a three-story beach house overlooking Albemarle Sound and lots of activities for those of us who came in two days early.
