High School Communications Contest
Ohio Professional Writers Annual Communications Contest
OPW has an annual communications contest that encourages and rewards excellence in communication and provides members an opportunity to compete against regional colleagues in a broad range of categories set by National Federation of Press Women.
Eligibility
- Anyone is welcome to enter the Ohio Professional Writers contest. First place winners are automatically entered in the NFPW contest if that winner is an NFPW member.
- The NFPW communications contest is open to all NFPW members.
- All 2010 national contest entries must have been published, issued, broadcast, printed or e-published between January 1, 2009 and December 31, 2009.
Deadline
The deadline is roughly mid-January 2010, with state winners recognized at the annual OPW spring meeting, and national winners recognized at the annual NFPW Communications Conference in September.
Categories
The 73 categories encompass everything from newspapers to newsletters, advertising, PR, TV, radio and online work.
Forms
All information is on the NFPW Web site (nfpw.org) and brochures will be mailed out in late fall.

High School Communications Competition
The OPW High School Communications Competition inspires students to excel in their quest for excellence.
Eligibility
- Ohio High School students
- First-place state winners advance to national competition.
- Work eligible for the 2010 competition must have been completed between March 1, 2009, and Feb. 28, 2010.
Deadline
The deadline is roughly mid-March, with state winners recognized at the annual OPW spring meeting, and national winners recognized at the annual NFPW Communications Conference in September.
Categories
Students compete in one of 14 categories: Editorial, Opinion, News Story, Feature Story, Sports Story, Column, Feature Photo, Sports Photo, Cartooning, Reviews, Graphics, Single-Page Layout, Double-Truck Layout and Environment.
Awards
First place winners are automatically entered in the NFPW contest if that winner is an NFPW member.
Each national winner will receive a certificate, with first-place winners also receiving a $100 cash prize. Honors are presented during the High School Communications Competition Luncheon at the annual NFPW conference. National winners are invited to make remarks at the luncheon if they wish to do so.
The only nationwide communications competition for high school students, the contest is endorsed by the National Association of Secondary School Principals. Dow Jones announces first-place winners and promotes the competition in its publication distributed to journalism advisers across the nation, giving students and their teachers/advisers local and nationwide recognition.
