OPW member wins top National Federation of Press Women honor
Peggyann Hutchinson, member of Oregon Press Women (OPW) since 1962, is the 2007 Communicator of Achievement of the National Federation of Press Women (NFPW). The presentation was made by NFPW President Meg Hunt.
She received the NFPW’s highest honor at its 70th anniversary celebration in Richmond, Virginia. Hutchinson was selected from 19 nominees on September 22, 2007.
Hutchinson is an award winning reporter, editor and world traveler. She is one of the first women in Oregon to be named a newspaper’s business editor. Since retiring from the Medford Oregon Mail Tribune in 1998, she provides the paper with a personal clipping service from her reading of newspapers from everywhere she travels.
Hutchinson was Oregon Press President from 1971-1973 and is NFPW archivist. She continues her travels with the National Newspaper Association (NNA) to news hot spots around the world..
Before joining the Tribune staff, where she worked for 42 years, she was a radio copy editor in Albuquerque, N.M. and a journalist in the US Navy during the Korean War. She joined the NNA in 1953, negotiating with the Mail Tribune to take a month each year at her own expense to join the association’s study missions. She filed and sold stories from eight continents.
An American Association of University Women endowment named for her has given fellowships to more than 2,600 women representing 134 countries.
