Statement adopted by the NFPW membership on news organizations’ access to the White House

Protecting the First Amendment requires constant, collective vigilance. As members of the National Federation of Press Women, we know protecting journalists means more than protecting those who report the news. We are also protecting the public’s right to know, to question, to dissent, and to have access to facts needed to make informed decisions.

NFPW stands in solidarity with all organizations who oppose any attempt to crack down or place bans on independent media in blatant violation of the First Amendment. An example is the blocking of news organizations’ access to the White House based on presidential preference. Such violations cause irreparable damage by depriving the public of useful and timely information. Press freedom cannot be taken for granted. Vigilance is our safeguard to ensure an informed public holds the power that is rightfully theirs.
