The "First Town in the First State"
Step into the quiet charm of Lewes, where history and coastal beauty come together in one of the state’s most picturesque seaside communities. Often called “The First Town in the First State,” Lewes traces its roots back to the early 1600s, when Dutch settlers first arrived and established a short-lived colony. Today, that rich past is still visible in its preserved architecture, maritime heritage, and welcoming small-town atmosphere. Your visit to Lewes includes Zwaanendael Park, along with spectacular views of Delaware Bay and the Breakwater East End Lighthouse. We'll stop at Lewes Beach where Coastal Hazards Specialist, Danielle Swallow, will discuss "Coastal Delaware's Environmental Challenges." Danielle is co-founder of the Resilient and Sustainable Communities League, a collaborative network of state agencies, nonprofits, and academic institutions that convenes partners, leverages limited resources, and coordinates efforts to build a more resilient and sustainable Delaware. Enjoy lunch on your own at one of the many eateries in Lewes. There's something to tickle the palate of both ocean and land lovers! Additional highlights at this stop:
- Delaware Seashore State Park (climb the WWII Watchtower for a 14-mile view of the seashore)
- The 1884 Lewes Life-Saving Station Boat House and Lightship Overfalls
- The 1700s Cannonball House Maritime Museum
- Cape Henlopen State Park
Rehoboth Beach - "The Nation's Summer Capital"
Walk on the boardwalk and wade in the surf of the great Atlantic Ocean, visit the seaside shops in this iconic beach town, and meet some local award-winning authors, journalists, and photographers. Highlights include:
- Naturalist-led hike along the shore of Gordon's Pond
- Photography tips from an award-winning photographer and gallery owner
- Enjoy an order of Thrasher's fries along the boardwalk (if you can keep the seagulls from getting to them first)
Coastal Dining
Fish-On is considered one of the best seafood restaurants in Lewes, offering a relaxed yet lively coastal dining experience. Known for its fresh, simply prepared seafood and welcoming atmosphere, the restaurant blends a casual beach-town vibe with polished service and thoughtful cuisine. Dinner is included with the tour (alcoholic beverages are on your own).
